Zebra Mussels take hold in Lake Waubesa

As Lake Waubesa residents prepare for winter, the ritual of removing docks and boat hoists uncovered some unwanted guests.  The Zebra Mussels have moved in, once they are established, there is little that can be done to control them.

Zebra Mussels feed on algae which can help improve water clarity.  That is where the good news ends.  Water clarity allows the sun to reach more bottom surface.  This enhances weed growth creating larger and thicker weed beds.  Less good algae means a smaller food supply for native organisims and small fish.

Research continues to find ways to control this invader.  For more information see DNR website:  http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/invasives/fact/zebra.html
